Aika Review

First up in my list of games I'm keeping an eye on for the future is the Korean PvP Import--Aika.

So this game is definitely the Korean DAoC. PvE feels like DAoC release: you're running basic quests or you are PBAE leveling.

End-game is PvP-RvR just like DAoC, relics and all. Only this game has 5 factions instead of 3. And the factions can actually form alliances to fight each other. I guess the zerg guilds in each realm compete every week to see who is in charge of making decisions. You can, however, actually PK people in your own realm too if they are pissing you off. There's penalties for it, but it's a cool option.

Bad aspects? This is a Korean game and you can't fool yourself into thinking otherwise. If you've ever played a korean game, you know what I mean. There's a bunch of weird eastern, potentially sexually depraved/pedophile things. Also, the graphics are definitely meh, at best.

But the biggest downer is that it's free to play. I know that sounds awesome, but that means there's a cash shop. And koreans have a long history of letting bads buy things they need to overpower people with skill. And that makes the game worthless. In this case, the game is still in beta so we don't know what will be in the shop yet.

Overall though--it's definitely worth keeping an eye on. I'll keep dicking around when no one is on to play wow. If they develop a 6v6 community like DAoC eventually did, and if the cash shop is not game-breaking, it might be worth checking out somewhere down the line. It's definitely nothing to get up in arms over quite yet. But I'll watch it.
